Whalsay Visitor Information Guide

Whalsay the island to the east of the mainland and north north east from Lerwick with which it has regular car-ferry communication is important in the fishing industry and at Symbister has an interesting relic of Shetland's “pre-Scottish" days, in a Hanseatic Booth. Before Shetland was handed over to Scotland, and even for many years after the main trading was with the Hanseatic ports, principally Bremen and Hamburg.

These Hanseatic merchants built booths for the storage of their own merchandise and for the goods bought from the Shetlanders: the Booth preserved at Symbister is very much as it was in those days, 500 years ago.
