Shawbost 18 miles from Stornoway and 6 miles south west from Barvas, a busy small town distinguished by a remarkable museum which owes its existence to the talents of the local junior school pupils. These children, guided by their teacher, took part in the Highland Village Competition of 1970, and the Education Authority was so impressed by their efforts that they took over a disused church, installed lighting and heating and established the museum.

This contains a fascinating collection of items illustrating the old way of life in Lewis, including crofting, fishing, Harris-tweed weaving, old photographs and local archives. Another project in the same competition was the restoration of an ancient Norse water-mill.

Admission to these enterprising achievements is free, but donations for further work are welcomed. Shawbost also has an active Harris-tweed spinning and finishing mill.
