Newtonmore Inverness-Shire. This is the most southerly of the Highland holiday resorts that are known collectively as Speyside. It was here that pony trecking was first introduced as an organized holiday sport in Scotland, and the village is also a recognized base for skiing in the Cairngorms Associations with the Clan Macpherson. who dominated the area in earlier days, are recalled in the village's clan museum. The collection includes the famous 'black chanter' of the clan battle at Perth and the green banner under which the Macphersons never knew defeat.
Adjoining the main road just south of the village is the local shinty ground. Ellen the scene of modern heroic encounters dominating the view from here is the hill Craig Dhu that gave the Clan Macpherson its rallying call.
The village has a wide range of hotel accommodation. It is admirably situated as the centre for walking or car touring. Glen Banchor running westwards through the foothills of the Monadhliaths, is attractive country for holiday expeditions, and farther still to the west beyond Lagganbridge the Corrieyairack Psss offers a challenging walk and a classic view, good fishing, golf, tennis courts that convert into culling rinks. and a sociable programme of ceilidhs are some of the other features of the village during its two holiday seasons.
