Newton near the northern tip of Nort Uist, has in a shallow loch at its road end Dun An Sticir, an ancient dun, reached by a causeway. This is said to be the last inhabited dun on the island, its final occupant having been Hugh MacDonald. son of Archibald the Clerk, a lineal descendant of MacDonald of Sleat. This Hugh MacDonald claimed rights to part of North Uist and took refuge in the dun (l60l- 2) to defend himself against the rightful heir.
Unfortunately he was betrayed, captured and taken to Skye where he was thrown into the dungeons of Duntulm Castle, and fed on salt beef until he died of thirst. During the summer there is a ferry service between Newton, Berneray and Leverburgh.
