MUIR OF 0RD Ross and Cromerty

Muir of Ord formerly called Tarradale is in the centre of a large crofting area. On the muir now a golf course, there used to be great cattle, sheep and horse markets or 'trysts'. founded in 1820 and second in importance only to those at Falkirk in the mid19th century Some 4 miles north east of Muir of Ord is Kilcoy the ancient seat of the Mackenzies, restored in the 17th century.

The church of Kilchrist half a mile to the east to the was the scene of a grim traditional incident of the early 17th cent, the Macdonalds, led by Allan Dubh of Lundy, plundered the lands and so it is said, set fire to the church filled with men, women. and children, whose dying cries were drowned by the skirl of Glengarry's piper as he marched round playing his pipes.

About 2 miles south east on the shores of the Beauly Firth, is Tarradale House, where the geologist Sir Roderick Murchison (1792-1871) was born. It contains a notable library, and is now used as a Field Study Centre under the administration of Aberdeen University Geography Department.
