Corrimony Chambered Cairn Reviews and Attractions for your stay in the Glen Urquhart area. The Corrimony Chambered Cairn is a cairn of the "Clava type" that has been remarkably preserved throughout the years. It illustrates the expertise and forethought of the people who constructed it because a significant amount of resources were used in the construction of its cemetery, and unlike at Clava, a significant portion of the roof of the passage still stands. The cairn may be found in a glen, and...

Exploring Drumnadrochit Holiday Accommodation Guide

Drumnadrochit is located at the head of Urquhart Bay on the northern shore of Loch Ness. The village is surrounded by the glens, Glen Urquhart and Glen Moriston, as well as the Great Glen that reaches across from Inverness in the east to Fort William in the west. The Great Glen Way runs for 73 miles along the Great Glen from Fort William to the Capital of the Highlands, Inverness.

Drumnadrochit is a great location for exploring the Highlands, rich in legends and mysteries. It is a convenient centre for touring, walking, cycling, bird watching, fishing, golfing or horse riding. Here you will find the largest and best known loch in the Great Glen, Loch Ness. The Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition is about Loch Ness, and the world famous Nessy. Explore Urquhart Castle, a classic romantic ruin jutting out into the loch. It is close to the village of Drumnadrochit, on the shores of Loch Ness. In the 500 years or so of being a mediaeval castle, Urquhart has played several important roles and been a popular recurring feature in a bloody and turbulent Scottish history. Seized after Edward I's invasion of Scotland and reclaimed by Robert the Bruce in the 14th century, the Castle was repeatedly attacked during the 15th and 16th centuries by the MacDonald Lords of the Isles, until 1692, when the Castle was largely destroyed in the fight between the Williamite and Jacobite groups.

Today, the ruin of the castle can be found on the slopes underneath the A82. Urquhart Castle is owned by the National Trust for Scotland so if you would like to visit any of Scotland's many tourist attractions the visit Scotland Holiday Accommodation Guide for more information.

On the village green, which is turned yellow by daffodils in spring, you can find a stunning model formed by miniature hedges and plants of Urquhart Castle. There is a direct bus departing from Inverness. Services depart hourly and operate every day. The journey takes approximately 29 minutes. You can drive to Drumnadrochit. The road is well established but can get busy in the season. In any direction, always allow for extra time as the region is very popular with tourists.

In the Scottish Highlands you can find complete peace and a perfect opportunity to relax staying in some of the most spectacular scenery, offering all types of accommodation to book from bed and breakfast, hotels, self catering, holiday rentals, caravans, pods, A frames, caravan parks, camping, camper-van sites, castles, lodges, a light house, or a bothy on the edge of the ancient forest or half way up a mountain side. In the latter half of March 2023, we went to Drumnadrochit and stayed there for a week. This location serves as an excellent jumping off point for excursions to Loch Ness, Inverness, and the surrounding areas. The Jacobite cruise, which departs from a port about 13 kilometres away, comes highly recommended. You can drive to Urquart Castle in two minutes, or you may walk there if you like. Either way, you have the option. Fort William can be reached by foot in half an hour, while the breath-taking Eilean Donan castle can be reached on horseback in an hour.

In the heart of the hamlet is a charming little green with a few benches set up for people to use when having picnics. The Ness Delhi offers exceptionally tasty fare at prices that are fairly reasonable. The food served at Fiddlers, a neighbourhood tavern and restaurant, is likewise of the highest calibre.

Having said that, a word of caution. AVOID the neighbourhood post office that is located in the core of the community. You can tell the man is hard of hearing because there is a sign posted on the window where you go to draw money at the far end of the business. The sign says that you have to shout for him because he is hard of hearing.

We were instructed to go to this town after being told that it acted as the hub for Loch Ness and that it was the location where tourists could acquire information and hikes to do while they were there. Unfortunately, the tourist information centre was closed (it is now used as a transit hub for tours), and the walk that we followed from a sign in the parking lot was passable but did not offer anything that was particularly interesting. Instead of going to Fort Augustus, it would have been more beneficial for us to go there.

Lovely green in the middle of Drumnadrochit

When the weather is nice, the village green is a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy some of the delicious food that is produced in the areas that are immediately surrounding the village green. The flower arrangements, the neatly maintained grass, and the quaint bed and breakfasts that are positioned all around the perimeter are actually what set this experience apart from others like it. It is crucial that you do not become too annoyed with the tourist boutiques because, despite the fact that they can be a little tacky, they are a critical boost for the economy in these regions, and it is necessary that you do not become too angry with them because of this reason. It would be helpful if you could not be too critical of the tourist stores.ā˜•

Drumnadrochit Village Green

We spent a week in Drumnadrochit, Scotland, in late June of 2021. You may use it as a starting point to explore Loch Ness, Inverness, and the surrounding environs. The Jacobite cruise is just 8 miles distant, and I would suggest it to anyone who is interested in history. Urquart Castle is about 2 minutes away by automobile, and you could walk there if you wanted to. Fort William is around 50 minutes distant. The castle of Eilean Donan is about a 60-minute drive away and is quite lovely.
A pleasant tiny green with picnic seats may be found in the heart of the village. There are some wonderful dishes served at the Ness Delhi, and the prices are fairly cheap. Also worth mentioning is Fiddlers, a local pub/restaurant that serves wonderful meals. There is a COOP in the area that is convenient. It is still light outside till 11 p.m. at night.
