Papa Westray to the north east of Westray is some 4 miles long and 1 mile across and has the North Hill of rough moorland, rich in plant and animal life. On the Holm of Papay just east of the main island, there is a preserved stalled cairn. Papa Westray it self has the famous Knap of Howar, a house lived in 5.000 years ago, two houses described as the earliest known standing houses in north west Europe, are side by side at the shore.
In addition to the ruins of the chapel of St Tredwell, there are the 12th century church and graveyard of St Boniface, which was probably built on the site of a 7th century Celtic monastery, since a stone cross of that period has been found there.
