Foula some 16 miles west of Walls on the Mainland and 50 miles north of the nearest point in Orkney, probably has a greater atmosphere of isolation than any other inhabited Scottish island and sadly, it cannot claim the partial rehabilitation enjoyed by Fair Isle The population of Foula has shrunk to a mere thirty.
Populated, on the other hand, by huge colonies of sea birds, the most striking being the bonxies, or great skuas, which can become aggressive in the breeding season. The island rises from the sea as sheer cliffs that culminates in five peaks, the highest of which are the Sneug (1,373 ft), and on the north west coast the Kame 1 ,200 ft Above Ham Voe, where you will find the harbour.
