Dunrobin Castle is a must stop on the North coast 500, even if it is just to photo of the fairytale-like exterior. Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands this castle set atop a hill above the gardens it is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside with 189 rooms all tastefully furnished with period pieces, beautifully maintained interior and outside lovely gardens which are visible from many of the castle windows, they appear to be replicas in miniature of Versailles in France, one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, but most of the present building and the gardens were added by Sir Charles Barry between 1835 and 1850 home to the Earls and the Clan Sutherland, later the Dukes of Sutherland, one thing in some of the castle you will find a lot of animal heads and rugs especially in the the museum from a period when hunting was the norm, but don't let this put you off.
The Castle is located 1 mile north of Golspie, 50 miles North of Inverness on the A9 and approximately 5 miles south of Brora, overlooking the Dornoch Firth.
There is a Museum in the formal Castle grounds, originally built as a summer house by William, Earl of Sutherland, the museum displays an important collection of archaeological relics, geology, gold panning at Kildonan, and examples of the coal mining at Brora, this Victorian, early 20th century collection of artefacts is one of the most remarkable private collections to be found in the British Isles.
