The Castle was burned in l645 by Lord Lewis Gordon on behalf of Montrose during the Marquess's northern campaign for Charles l. but the earlier parts survived to be included in the rebuilding, an addition was made in 1840.
ln the Castle is a fine private collection of Dutch, English, and Flemish paintings.
