Scalloway the former capital of Shetland, has a place in contemporary history as a base for the famous ‘Shetland bus" operations during the Second World War, in which small Norwegian fishing boats crossed to Nazi occupied Norway to carry out sabotage or to land secret agents and bring back refugees, a bronze plaque at nearby Lunna commemorates the project.

On the west of the Mainland, and a mere 3 miles from Lerwick on the east coast, Scalloway is set in an attractive bay at the southern extremity of the well farmed valley of Tingwall, so called because the site of the old Norse parliament or 'ting' is at the north end of Tingwall Loch. It is overlooked by the ruins of the castle of the notorious Earl Patrick Stewart who tyrannized Shetland. as he did Orkney, in the late 16th and early 17th century Scalloway has a quiet, old-world atmosphere, although it is a busy fishing and ship repair centre, with three modern fish-processing plants. In this district may be seen true Shetland ponies, 3.5 ft or less in height, with rough shaggy coats and so hardy that they even winter on the hills.

Scalloway, nestled in the heart of the Shetland Islands, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. My recent visit to this village left me with a deep appreciation for its history, natural beauty, and welcoming community.

History and Culture (5/5): Scalloway is steeped in history, and its crown jewel is undoubtedly Scalloway Castle. This well-preserved piece of history offers a captivating look into Scotland's past. The Shetland Bus Memorial, commemorating the wartime heroics of locals, is a poignant tribute that reflects the islanders' resilience and bravery.

Natural Beauty (4/5): Scalloway's picturesque location along the coast offers stunning sea views and opportunities for coastal walks. The nearby nature reserves, particularly the Noss National Nature Reserve, are a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Activities (4/5): Scalloway serves as an excellent base for exploration. From island hopping to hiking, there is a variety of outdoor adventures to engage in. The Shetland Craft Trail adds a cultural dimension to your trip, showcasing the artistic talent of the region.

Accessibility (3/5): While Scalloway's remote location offers a sense of escapism, reaching the village requires some planning, typically involving flights to Shetland and a journey by road or ferry. This adds to the sense of adventure.

Weather (3/5): The unpredictable Shetland weather can present a challenge for outdoor activities, so packing for variable conditions is essential.

Overall Experience (4/5): Scalloway offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The warmth of the local community and the authentic charm of the village are captivating. While it may not provide the conveniences of larger cities, it more than compensates with its immersive historical sites and the breathtaking landscapes of the Shetland Islands.

My visit to Scalloway was a journey through time and nature, and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking an authentic and enriching Scottish experience. This quaint village, with its strong ties to the past and the beauty of the Shetland Islands, is a place where history and nature come together, creating memories that last a lifetime.
