Sanday is one of the larger inhabited outer islands of Orkney with an area of 50.43 square km. The Island lies off the north coast of Scotland. The island has a small population of around 500. The island is the location for the  Quoyness chambered tomb, dating from 2900 BC, with an elongated central chamber and more cells than Maes Howe.

The island is a favourite resting place for terns and rare migrant birds.
