Ross-shire (Ross & Cromarty) is a historic county in the Scottish Highlands.

The county borders Sutherland, Cromartyshire, Inverness-shire and an exclave of Nairnshire, stretching from the North Sea coast to the Atlantic coast, standing between Inverness-shire and Sutherland, it is mountainous, dominated by the Northwest Highlands, divided into Easter Ross and Wester Ross.

The coast of Wester Ross is deeply indented with craggy sealochs and with scattered islands, It includes most of Easter Ross with a gentler coast with fertile land, notably on the Black Isle between the Cromarty Firth and the Beauly Firth. as well as Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, its only town being Stornoway on the east coast, the area of Ross-shire was based on that of the historic province of Ross, the county town is Dingwall at the head of the Cromarty Firth, the name is Norse, a memory of the extent of Norwegian power in the north, a traditional county town.

There is salmon and trout Fishing on the River Alness or brown trout on one of the many beautiful lochs in the area.

Trout Quest has access to prime salmon and sea trout fishing on the private beats of the River Alness and a private stocked lochan on the Novar Estate.

There are many of the top golf courses in this region, with Brora, Golspie and Tain all of which are pay and play courses.

Royal Dornoch, with stunning views over the Dornoch Firth, it was recently rated in the top fifteen courses in the world.

Head south towards Inverness and choose from Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Nairn, the Walker Cup venue in 1999, and Nairn Dunbar, a highly rated championship links course.

This region has country pursuits such as grouse, pheasant or clay-pigeon shooting, or a full week of stalking on some of the Highlands best estates, offering hunting trips for guests with qualified professionals.

Mountain biking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, and there are some fantastic places to cycle.

The best way is to drive in Ross-shire with each route varying in length and offers a scenic alternative to main trunk roads and motorways, ideal for a self-drive tour of Scotland, the driving tour routes are easy to follow and well signposted, simply look out for the distinctive brown and white signs.

The main towns are Dingwall, Gairloch, Kyle of Lochalsh, Fortrose, Port of Ness, Tain, Stornoway, Strathpeffer & Alness.

Inverness is easily accessible by rail, there are also overnight train services on the Caledonian Sleeper direct from London Euston to Inverness.
