In 1819 the Clynelish Brora Distillery was established by George Granville and Leveson-Gower, the distillery was initially intended to take some proportion of local whisky supply away from the smugglers. In 1896, James Ainslie & Heilbron, a Glasgow-based blending company, acquired the distillery and rebuilt it.
