Port of Ness at the end of the A857 on the north east extremity of Lewis is an attractive fishing village where the people are often said to have signs of their Viking ancestry in their appearance. They also have the happy Scandinavian habit of painting their houses in bright colours.
It was an annual custom here for the younger fishermen to set out each September on an expedition to either St Kilda or the Isle of Suilisgeir some 30 miles due north to catch young Solan geese or Gugas then still congregating in their thousands on those rocky outposts. The solan geese had indeed been a major source of meat for generations on the more remote islands. The hunters catch the birds with long poles, with considerable peril to themselves, on the precipitous cliffs, and they are then prepared for salting. These Gugas are considered a delicacy, and many are sent to Isles exiles all over the world. This expedition does not now necessarily take place every year.
Traveling from Stornoway to the district of Ness, which is located approximately 27 miles away and benefits from a number of local amenities such as a gas station and a local shop next door, a post office, a laundrette, and another village shop with a butchers and a good bus service in the area, continue along the A857 Barvas Moor Road. When you arrive at Barvas, follow the road around to the right. Keep driving on this route all the way past Galson, and keep going until you reach Port of Ness.
There is a ferry that travels to the island that departs from Uig, which is located in the northern part of Skye. You can get to the ferry terminal in Uig from Kyle of Lochalsh by travelling over the Skye bridge and then heading up to Uig.
Stornoway can be reached from Ullapool on the mainland through a frequent ferry service. Those who are interested in travelling to Lewis, Harris, or any of the other Hebridean Islands can take advantage of the fact that the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Stornoway departs twice daily and once on Sundays during the Winter.
Although the service is limited on Sundays, both ferry lines are operational seven days a week. It is recommended that you make a reservation in advance if you plan to transport a vehicle.
Loganair operates flights to and from the airports in Inverness, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, and passengers have the option of renting a car to get to the ferry that will take them to the island. Benbecula is easily accessible through a swift flight departing from Glasgow Airport.
Book your stay in a traditional family vacation home that is situated in the peaceful village of South Dell in the district of Ness. The ground floor features an entrance porch, kitchen, lounge, double bedroom, rear porch, and bathroom. The first floor features a top landing and two additional double bedrooms. Externally, the property benefits from a spacious garden that is ideal for dining al fresco, and to the front, there is a driveway with ample parking space.
The home offers accommodation that extends to the entrance hallway and is set in a traditional detached bungalow on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis roughly 20 miles from Stornoway. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are all open to one another, and along with the two bedrooms and bathroom, this vacation rental is perfect for families.
