Pony trekking and horse riding in the Scottish Highlands

Horse riding and pony trekking in the highlands

skilled guides make this a superb experience with varied hill, moorland, river and pine forest riding, much of it off track, there is the potential to see wildlife and enjoy varied  routes  through Scotland’s most stunning scenery, including National Parks and vast areas of unspoilt wilderness.
From the vibrant city of Inverness and the Home of Nessie the Loch Ness monster through the Caledonian Canal to Fort William, and to the tranquil and peaceful Islands, the Inner and Outer Hebrides, and the Isle of Skye great place for sunsets, its a place that has something for everyone. from leisurely hacks taken at a steady pace to exhilarating hill riding where the terrain sets the challenge, discover the thrill of riding a highland Pony, one of the three native breeds of the Scottish Highlands and Islands with the Shetland pony" and the Eriskay pony.

These ponies over many centuries have adapted to the variable and often severe climatic and environmental conditions of Scotland. The winter coat consists of a layer of strong badger-like hair over a soft dense undercoat, which enables this breed of pony to live out in all types of weather.
The coat is shed in the spring to reveal a smooth summer coat,
The height of a Highland pony is between 13 hands to 14.2 hands the head is well-carried and alert with a kindly eye, broad muzzle and deep jowl. Ponies are to have a well-balanced and compact body with a hardiness combined with a kindly nature and even temperament, with deep chest, well-sprung ribs, powerful quarters with a well-developed thigh, strong gaskin and clean flat hocks, traits include, flat hard bone, broad knees, short cannon bones, oblique pasterns and well-shaped broad dark hoofs.

When considering to go horse riding in the Highlands remember some routes can be over undulating and often very uneven, steep terrain which is challenging and requires vigilance from riders. For your safety and the welfare of the ponies please consider carefully your riding ability and fitness, be honest about your ability and you will enjoy this fantastic activity.
