Catch and transport of herring, salmon, whitefish, and shellfish took place in the salt house, which is now a ruin at the foot of the steps. Follow in the footsteps of...

Latheron, This is one of the most attractive places in Caithness, as witness the derivation of the name: 'Haven of Seals'.

Its harbour was created by building a wall round a natural cove; this area is known as Latheron wheel or Janetstown. In its hey day it had a significant share in the boom days of "the herring fishing industry.

Today, the harbour tends to silt up and only a few lobster boats and pleasure craft use it.

The old parish church is now a museum devoted to the Clan Gunn (Gunn is a common surname in these pans, going back to Viking days).

Latheron is a favourite haunt of painters, drawn by the splendid seascapes and the magnificent coastline it offers.

Latheron has some delighful bed and breakfast accommodation available.
