The unpleasant name for this pleasing isle has puzzled many people. Dean Munro in his Western Isles of Scotland calls it 'Swyns's Isle for the Gaelic word from which it takes its name meaning 'pig ' and it originally acquired it from a fancied resemblance to a sow. Muck is 24 miles from Eigg and its nearest mainland is on Ardnamurchan nearly 6 miles away, but Arisaig the nearest port and town being 15 miles north east.
