Flannan Islands Visitor information Guide

Flannan Islands, the consist of a group of seven lying 15 miles out into the Atlantic west of Lewis. At one time they were regarded with special sanctity and were used for grazing sheep, but, since the lighthouse was made automatic and there is no need for resident keepers to tend it, at last check the islands are uninhabited.

This lighthouse was built in 1899 on Eilean Mor, 280 ft high a rock so steep that steps and paths had to be cut into it before the summit became accessible: in stormy weather the seas crash right over it. The shore station was at Breasclete during a severe gale at Christmas 1900, all three

lighthouse keepers on duty at the rock disappeared without trace: it could only be surmised that they had gone to secure some gear at the landing stage and were overwhelmed by a sudden wave.
