One of the most iconic trips across the Highlands is undoubtedly the one that takes travellers through the glen. Visit one of Scotland's forty national scenic areas, including the world-famous and arguably most magnificent Ben Nevis and Glen Coe National Scenic Area. Scotland is home to a total of forty national scenic areas. In 2010, Scottish Natural Heritage conducted a review of the national scenic areas. In that review, they made reference to the "soaring, dramatic splendour" of Glen Coe, as well as "the suddenness of the transition between the high mountain pass and the lightly wooded strath" in the lower part of the glen. The beginning segment of this journey, Upon arrival in Glasgow, one might choose to go by plane, rail, or bus. Following the route to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, the starting point is Milngavie on the edge of Glasgow. The route offers a fabulous introduction to the Scottish Highlands, passing Loch Lomond, the vast expanse of Rannoch Moor, crossing the hills to Loch Leven, and finally arriving at Fort William. The total distance is approximately 150 miles. After you have arrived in Fort William, you will be able to go back to Glasgow by bus or train. The subsequent stage of this amazing journey will take you to the beginning of the Great Glen Way.
