#Activities For Everyone

Downton offers some great outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy. It is located 6 miles south of Salisbury and just outside of the New Forest National Park. Downton is a prominent historic Wiltshire community that dates back to the 12th century. A thriving town with its own schools, supermarkets, pubs and businesses as well as a village hall and recreation grounds that include a football pitch, bowling green, and a leisure centre with a gym and tennis courts, it is home to a number of different nationalities. It is estimated that there are around 20 organisations and groups in the hamlet, in addition to a well-known village band. More than 20,000 people attend the Cuckoo Fair every year. The fair, which has over 250 craft and other stalls, along with live music, dancing, and other entertainment, attracts over 20,000 visitors each year. The hamlet is also known for its fishing, as well as for its award-winning local brewery and as a starting point for exploring the River Avon and the New Forest region.

Follow the trail until it curves left and descends a hill, then turn right off the path via a waymarked metal gate into a wooded section. In the spring, look for primroses, bluebells, wood anemones, and creeping buttercups, among other flowers. Pass through a different gate. To minimise disruption to wildlife and cattle grazing on the pastures, please keep dogs under strict supervision at all times. After emerging from the trees, turn left onto a gravel road that will take you to Folds Farm. Turn right at the track junction to join the Avon Valley Path for a brief leg of the journey. Continue straight ahead through the farm and over a little brook to reach your destination. At the way-marker, go over a cattle grid and continue straight ahead on the gravel route until you reach the main road. Turn right and continue down the road for 80 metres, where you will take your first right down a dirt lane alongside some buildings. Continue down this lower lane, which eventually becomes an enclosed grassy track that leads past a little home.. A wooden bridge with a stile, which spans a creek that flows beside a meadow, awaits you ahead. Cross the bridge and continue down the route alongside the creek until you reach a stile leading into the next field. Continue straight ahead, passing through two more fields with gates. At the third waymarked gate, take a right onto a gravel track and through a big gate uphill to the intersection with the main route. After passing the way-marker, continue straight ahead uphill through a wooded area. Return to the field gate and retrace your steps along the hedgerow until you reach the first way-marker. After turning right through the gate, you will re-join the road and begin the climb back upwards to the Fighting Cocks bar.
