The Hebridean Way. This is an on-road route of 185 miles (297km), across 10 islands, six causeways and on two ferries. The spectacular island chain of the Outer Hebrides has always been popular with cyclists thanks to quiet roads and fabulous scenery, It covers varied terrain including roads, small hills, tracks, boardwalks, bog hopping, sand dunes, and beaches, including some of the UK’s best beaches, through rugged hills, and across miles and miles of open moorland. Take the train from Glasgow to Oban at the start of the trip. If you are taking your own bikes, Remember to reserve a place for your bikes. The route starts when you have to catch a ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra, You then cycle south on to the island of Vatersay at the southern tip of the archipelago,
First Stage Difficulty: Easy
First Stage Information:
Starting from Vatersay. From Vatersay you cycle to Daliburgh about 26 miles. Then you have the Ferry crossing From Daliburgh then cycle 37 miles to Clachan. Cycle from Clachan to Berneray, about 27 miles, Then Cycle to Berneray to Tarbert about 21 miles Then a Ferry crossing of about 60 minutes, Then Cycle to Callanish about 38 miles,
Second Stage Difficulty: Easy
Second Stage Information:
And then from Callanish, to finish at the Butt of Lewis lighthouse in the far north, At Stornoway catch the ferry to Ullapool, from Ullapool Cycle to Inverness or Garve and join the train service back south. If you are camping remember the Shops do not open on Sundays. Don’t get caught out, make sure you have enough supplies. The guide book say it takes 10 days to complete the route, but as in Scotland the weather can make all the difference on any journey, Don’t forget to add in travel time to your journey to and from the Outer Hebrides, Do the research invest in the appropriate apps that are available, keep an eye on the updates on the ferry crossings, check availability on the accommadation required for your trip, with all this in mind, dont forget to have the best time.
