Girnigoe Castle visitor Information Guide

Goinigoe is about three miles north of Wick, all transport facilities can be found to access the tourist areas here, Being such a strategic position, the site has been occupied for thousands of years, The site of this ruined castle has been excavated and found to have been occupied by the neolithic people between 4500 to 2000 BC and some of Mesolithic people before them.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe considered to be one of the earliest seats of Clan Sinclair, built by William Sinclair, the 2nd Earl of Caithness, around 1480. Recently the Clan Sinclair Trust has begun restoration work on the castle, in an attempt to preserve the archeological and historical importance of the structure. Much has been written over the centuries on the history of this spectacular ruin dramatically situated on cliffs projecting into Sinclair Bay There are rough coastal walking above unprotected high cliffs, boggy in places, sometimes the track can be wet.

To visit the castle take Noss Head road from Wick and at the end of the single track road you will find a car park and picnic area. The path direct from the car park is easy but doesn't really allow you to appreciate the best of this bit of coast. The route as described here is slightly longer, but includes a good cliff top section with views over Sinclair Bay.
