There is excellent sea fishing near them, but they are now virtually uninhabited. Some are used for grazing sheep, but most are simply breeding grounds for seals and birds. Tanera More, Priest Island, and Horse Island were formerly inhabited, and Tanera, Ristol, and Isle Martin had curing stations connected with Ullapool in the late 18th cent. In those days seemingly endless numbers of herring swam in and out of Loch Broom, but, after 1820, catches diminished acutely and the whole curing industry collapsed.

The largest and most fertile of the islands is Tanera More (801 acres), where Dr Fraser Darling the naturalist, lived for some time.

Some of the islands can be visited by motor boat from Ullapool or Achiltibuie.

The views eastwards towards the rocky mountains of Coigach and southwards towards Skye and the Torridons are spectacular.
