Egilsay a small island due north from Kirkwall and a mile east off Rousay contains the noble 12th century St Magnus Church, with its walls almost intact and the lofty round tower which forms a conspicuous landmark.
The use of large stones set on edge in the facing of the walls forms an unusual and attractive feature. This is believed to be the actual church in which Earl Magnus spent the long night in prayer before his ritual murder by Earl Haakon on lo April 1116.
