This town is noted for its friendly and inviting locals, as well as its calm ambience, in addition to having a broad array of great lodgings with various options ranging from luxury hotels to modest bed & breakfast locations. Cranborne Dorset is a great place to visit. It is now only a village, but it is an attractive one, an example of how pleasant modern red brick can be made to look. It was once the town of the hunting forest of Cranborne Chase, seat of the Chase Court and with a Benedictine abbey (980-1102), but it is now only a village, but it is an attractive one, an example of how pleasant modern red brick can be made to look. From the village green, the manor house, which is mostly Jacobean, can be seen. It is one among Dorset's most beautiful, and its gardens are open on occasion. It has been in the Cecil family since the early 17th century (Marquesses of Salisbury).

The Parish Council Chairman once pretended the High Street was a Grand Prix course with a county official as his passenger to persuade the County Council that a speed restriction was required. The enormous church is unusual in that it has a completely 13th century nave; nonetheless, mediaeval wall paintings, a fine pulpit from the early 15th century, and several 17th century monuments of note, notably one to a seven-year-old boy, diminish it.
A spectacularly chalk topped earthwork named Castle Hill lies about five miles to the south east, about which the only item known for certain is that a Mr Tregonwell buried his horse on it. It's possible that it's Anglo-Saxon.
Bokerly Dyke, the enormous defensive bank said to have been erected by the Romano British in the 4th and 5th centuries first against insurgency, then against Anglo-Saxons, still forms the Dorset Hampshire boundary two miles east.

The grounds of the Manor are only available on Wednesday afternoons, but the house is still in use, so there is no access to the inside; nevertheless, visitors are welcome to stroll around the grounds. I frequent the location and like the gardens. It may be reached via the Cranborne Garden Centre, which is another hidden treasure with a great cafe serving freshly prepared home-cooked food.
