Because of its closeness to Aldershot, Farnborough Hampshire has grown tremendously. The Royal Aircraft Establishment is based there, as is the Air Show, which takes place every alternate year.
Empress Eugenie of France visited Famborough Hill, a gabled, turreted home erected in 1862 that is now a monastery, in 1881. She stayed there till she died in 1920. She expanded the home and erected a Benedictine convent as well as the Church of St Michael, which features a marbled floor and a dome in a superb extravagant French Gothic style. She created a mausoleum in the crypt for herself, Napoleon III, and the Prince Imperial, with three exquisite granite monuments. The crucifix-shaped graves each weigh 5 tonnes and are accessed through a beautiful stairway. A 12th century artwork featuring three saints, Agnes, Mary Magdalene, and, suitably, Eugenia, may be seen nearby in the Church of St Peter.
The church includes a Norman nave and a weather-boarded tower from the 17th century.
Aldershot, the home of the British Army, is two miles to the south, featuring army museums and the Prince Consort Military Library.
