Scalpay the large island, about 3 miles by 1.5 miles at the entrance to East Loch Tarbert, in Harris, mainly engaged in herring and lobster fishing, it is connected to North Harris by a vehicular ferry, at the end of the road which runs east from Tarbert.
During his wanderings while being hunted after Culloden, Prince Charles Edward Stuart landed here and found refuge on the farm of Donald
Campbell, hereditary foresters to the MacLeods of MacLeod, for several days and Campbell gave the Prince his boat.

At the south east end of Scalpay stands Glass Island lighthouse facing out over the Minch and from it there are wide views of Skye, Lewis and Harris, the Uists and parts of the mainland. Some l0 miles east from Scalpay lie the impressive Shiant Isles, with their sheer cliffs populated by thousands of sea birds.
Boat trips to these islands are well worth while but only possible in suitable weather conditions.
