Step through the doors and step back in time to a 19th-century prison and courthouse, in use as a prison from 1820 to 1889, the building is now a living museum.

It is a category A listed building, experience what life was like for men, women and children, some as young as seven who were tried and locked up here.

Explore the atmospheric historic buildings and meet the costumed characters who animate the past in this unique living museum, very authentic, everyone was just so helpful. Included court house, old and new jails and exhibits as well as life stories of the people who passed through the jail, the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, the Guard in the first prison after coming out if the court house is fantastic! he tells the stories of the jail and when visiting the cells he marches up and down the corridor which adds to the atmosphere, walking through the corridors the cells are quite spooky with a female prisoner singing to her baby and an insane prisoner wailing and screaming.

An interesting, if at times gruesome place to see, very cold so wrap up warm if you are visiting in winter.
The only draw back to this attraction is that due to the age of the building it’s not disabled friendly.
