Visiting Fonthill Abbey And Discovering Nearest Attractions
Fonthill Abbey, a Gothic fantasy transformed into reality by William Beckford, an inventive but pampered son of a London lord mayor, once stood in Fonthill, Wiltshire, near Fonthill Gifford and Fonthill Bishop. He amassed a million pounds sterling at the age of 21 and afterwards established himself as a writer. After returning to England after a trip abroad, he commissioned Wyatt, the architect who was responsible for much of the destruction at Salisbury Cathedral and elsewhere, to construct an abbey for him, half-ruined and half-perfect.
The construction of this magnificent structure began in 1796 and lasted for several years, with an enthralled crowd watching its development. The abbey was designed in the shape of a cross, with a 275-foot-high Gothic tower at the centre. William Hazlitt described the event as "a sparkling waste of industrious idleness."
Nelson and Lady Hamilton made a visit to a still-unfinished monastery in 1800, amidst tremendous pomp and magnificence. Beckford retired to Bath in 1823 and sold the estate to John Farquhar for £330,000, warning him that the tower was dangerous. As it turned out, the monastery's foundations collapsed in 1825, leaving the abbey in ruins. Checkout the area and search Fonthill Abbey Holiday Accommodation Guide.
The Marquess of Westminster, however, erected another home nearby in 1859, this time in Scottish Baronial architecture.
Though nothing of the abbey survives, Fonthill Bishop, a community with few thatched homes and a Victorian church, has a beautiful gateway to the park. Approaching Hindon, driving on to Fonthill Gifford, and then tum off to Fonthill Bishop to drive by the lake is the greatest way to get a sense of the magnificent forested landscape.
