Visiting Farnborough Airfield

Farnborough was the location of the very first powered flight in the United Kingdom, which took place in 1908. Since the beginning of its existence, Farnborough has been an important centre for the development of aircraft in both the military and the commercial sectors. The Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough is the organisation that is mostly responsible for a number of key innovations that have significantly impacted aviation all over the world.

Farnborough was operated by the British Ministry of Defense (MOD) for both World Wars and the whole 40-year era of the Cold War; civil aviation activities did not begin there until 1989. The United States Department of Defense concluded that there was no longer a need for the airfield in 1991, and by 1994, the government had made the decision that it should be converted into a centre for business aviation. Following a competitive bidding process that was organised by the government in 1997, TAG Aviation was given the contract and eventually took ownership of the company. Preparedness activities continued right up until the year 1999. Following major upgrades that brought the airport up to CAA standards for commercial aviation, TAG Farnborough Airport Limited took over the airport in 2003 under a lease agreement that was for 99 years. At the end of 2007, TAG was successful in acquiring the freehold for the airfield.

Farnborough Airport has undergone extraordinary development ever since it was awarded its airfield lease in 1999 and its CAA licence in 2003. As a result, the airport is unrecognisable in its current form in the year 2019. TAG Farnborough Holdings Limited, which owns the airport in addition to the Aviator Hotel and The Swan pub, was recently sold by the airport's shareholders to a long-term infrastructure fund managed by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets. This move was made in order to ensure that the airport will continue to be successful in the future (MIRA). MIRA is the world's largest infrastructure manager and a division of Macquarie Group, which is one of Australia's top 10 corporations. Every day, more than 100 million people rely on the assets in which MIRA invests. MIRA is an experienced manager of airport infrastructure because the company manages investments in nine commercial airports in Europe and Australia as well as 68 fixed-base operations in the United States. The Farnborough International Airshow continues to reach new heights in every even-numbered year. An Outline of the History of the Farnborough Airport
