Explore Edington, Wiltshire, and its majestic priory church. It soars from its environment as a cruciform, superbly proportioned structure with a central tower and beautiful battlements. In 1352, Bishop of Winchester William of Edington, a native of this parish, opened a college for priests here. This was afterwards converted into a monastery for the Augustinian Order of Bonshommes at the request of the Black Prince. In Britain, there was just one other foundation of this order, and it was at Ashridge.
Except for the porch, the whole church was constructed between 1352 and 1361. It is an excellent example of the transition from the flowing Decorated to the stricter Perpendicular styles. The porch is three stories high, the oak entrance is huge, and the nave is 75 feet long with six arches on each side. The exquisite pink and white plasterwork, as well as the pulpit, were added in the 17th century. The parish was given this section, while the monks were given the chancel. A screen, dating from the 1500s but recently repaired, separates the two and leads into the chancel, which features some exquisite 14th-century sculpture.
The Lady Chapel's magnificent stained glass comes from the same era as the cathedral. There are numerous beautiful graves here, including ones that were imported from Imber.
