Fonthill Abbey, a Gothic fantasy transformed into reality by William Beckford, an inventive but pampered son of a London lord mayor, once stood in Fonthill, Wiltshire, near Fonthill Gifford and Fonthill Bishop. He amassed a million pounds sterling at the age of 21 and afterwards established himself as a writer. After returning to England after a trip abroad, he commissioned Wyatt, the architect who was responsible for much of the destruction at Salisbury Cathedral and elsewhere, to construct...

This is a fantastic small establishment.
We pulled into the parking lot not knowing what to expect, and what a pleasant surprise, a wonderful small spot for train fans. It still needs a lot of work, but with the aid of visitors, they will soon have it all handled.
It's well worth the two to three hours it takes to get there.
