Fortrose, This ancient Black Isle town was once the cathedral town of Ross shire and a noted seat of learning in medieval times. The cathedral was completed in the late I5th century and built of red sandstone, which lends a degree of charm and beauty to the now ruined structure.

Close by Fortrose is Chanonry Point and its lighthouse, where a stone marks the spot where Coinneach Odhar the Brahan seer, was executed, He was a rather misty character in Highland history, given credit for many prophecies that have since come true, such as the building of the Caledonian canal.

He prophesied the downfall of a number of great Highland chiefs in circumstances that were fulfilled down to small details. He died because his noble lady employer asked him to tell her what her husband was doing in France. What the seer saw was not to her liking and she had him burned in a tar barrel.

Fortrose has some great bed and breakfast accommodation ideal for touring the Black Isle.

Fortrose was settled by the Picts, you can find more than a dozen carved stones locally, The town lies between Avoch and Rosemarkie on the A832 on the southern coast of the Black Isle, facing the Inverness firth a narrow neck of land culminating in the chanonry point and a lighthouse separating Fortrose from the outer moray firth, you can reach Fortrose by car you travel north from Inverness on the A9 Inverness offers accommodation to suit all budgets from Bed and Breakfast, hotels and hostels, go over the Kessock Bridge, until you reach the Tore roundabout take the exit marked the A832 to Avoch, Fortrose and Cromarty.
