Glen Nevis place to visit Runs on the west and south flank of Ben Nevis with the water from the Nevis running through it, A single track road traverses much of the glen from Fort William it passes Achintee Farm where the path branches off to the summit of Ben Nevis, the road leads to and past Glen Nevis House the head quarters of Lochiel of the clan Cameron, The Clan Cameron fought as Jacobite s at the Battle of Prestonpans in1745 and the Battle of Falkirk in 1746 and on the front-line at the Battle of Culloden on the 6 April 1746. After the Battle of Culloden the Chief, Donald Cameron, also known as 'Gentle Lochiel', took refuge in France where he died in October 1748.

Fort William hosts the UCI Mountain Bike world cup at the nearby Nevis range There is a great range of facilities for cyclists and mountain bikers of all levels around Nevis Range and over 25 miles of forest cycling tracks. A dedicated cycle track leads from Fort William to the tracks.

The Nevis range also has a world class downhill mountain bike track - take your bike up the mountain in a gondola then cycle down again at high speed. Not for the faint hearted. there is a huge range of outdoor activities available around Fort William the mountains, forests, lochs and the North Sea all within easy reach so if you are interested in trying kayaking, go karting, canyoning, salmon fishing, quad biking, walking, sailing. It was founded in 1922 by a group of local enthusiasts the Museum’s collections tell the story of the region and its history.

Our most renowned and unusual collection relates to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite cause. But we also hold a wealth of curious and fascinating collections relating to less well-known aspects of the lives of the people of the West Highlands. From Fort William about 9 miles south east you will find Fort Dun Deardail a massive vitrified ruin you have Ben Nevis on your left, Nevis Forest on your right and the Stiell Falls Go along this road as far as the peat track that is part of the Cow Hill Circuit in the forest, at the top where it meets the West Highland Way several directions are signposted to get to this vitrified fort you take a long steady walk along the forest road, it stands on a hill west of the road at a height of 1,127 feet it measures 150 feet by 90 feet and in some places 50 feet thick there are some magnificent views from this point, Dun Deardail Fort is one in a line of vitrified forts that stretches from Craig Phadraig outside Inverness all the way down to the West Coast.
