Forvie is just north of Newburgh famous for its sands, stretching from the mouth of the river Ythan almost to Collieston which have overwhelmed or forced the retreat of whole communities over the centuries, is now a reserve of the Nature Conservancy Council. lt has the least disturbed sand-dune system in Scotland; large mobile dunes and unusual communities of heathland plants on fixed dunes; and the largest breeding concentration of eider duck in Britain, apart from four species of terns and many other birds.
Access is by indicated paths supervised by the Council: extensive research is also conducted on the reserve by Aberdeen University.

The old church of Forvie, said to have been founded by St Ninian, was partly excavated in the l9th century and its piscina is in the National Museum of Antiquities, Edinburgh.
In l95l further excavation revealed stone foundations and a village of nineteen circular huts 2,000 years old: relics of the l3th- and 14th-century village were also found.
