Glenlivet Banffshire This glen, which has Won World renown from the whisky associated with it, is in the north Grampians to the north east of Tomintoul.

The Livet Water flows north from the Ladder Hills to join the river Avon. The first of five distilleries was founded in 1824, when the Distillery Act put an end to over 200 illicit stills in the district.

Some 4 miles east of the village is the scene of the Battle of Glenlivet, Where on 4 October 1594 the Protestant Army, loyal to King James Vl and under the Earl of Argyll, was defeated by an insurgent Catholic army under the Earl of Huntly.

Above Livet Water and near the distillery are the remains of the l6th-century Blairfindy Castle the hunting seat of the earls of Huntly, and now an Ancient Monument.

At the junction of Livet Water and the Avon is a ruined ancient keep Castle Drumin.

There are also picturesque remains of an old bridge At Scalan, in the Braes of Glenlivet and at the head of the glen was hidden a Catholic seminary. for training young men in Scotland, and particularly from this part of Scotland. For the Catholic priesthood.

This secret spot was founded in l7l7, but it was plundered and burned after the Duke of Cumberland's victory over the Jacobite forces at Culloden in 1746. It was quietly removed to a

place near Inverlirie.
