Drumlithie some 6 miles south west of Stonehaven just off the A94, is an old burgh of barony, one of the villages visited by the Butcher Cumberland after the 45 Rising, its Episcopal Church burned and its clergy imprisoned in the Tolbooth at Stonehaven.

It has been said of Druinlithie that ‘the only regular feature about it is its irregularity.

This was a weaving village with a loom in every cottage, and as centrepiece of the main street is the steeple built in 1777 as a bell-tower from which the weavers‘ mealtimes were regulated by the tolling of the bell.

By 1878 power-looms had almost ended the hand loom era, and now the steeple bell is rung only for weddings and other important events. This is often taken to be the original of Segget in Cloud Howe in Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s trilogy A Scots Quair for he was brought up on his father’s farm here. Drumlithie offers holiday accommodation in B&B and self catering properties.
