Moy is best known as the seat of the chiefs of the Clan Mackintosh, this seat was first established in a castle on the island in Loch Moy and was occupied from the mid-14th cent. In about 1700 the chief moved to a new house at the north end of the loch it was burned about 1800 and subsequently replaced by larger house, extended in the 1860s.

This was found to have dry rot, and the latest house was built in 1955-8 as the residence of the Mackintosh of Mackintosh The hamlet of Moy stands on the main north road to Inverness on a plateau between the valleys of the Findhorn and the Nairn.

The famous Rout of Moy took place on the old road to Inverness on 16 February1746, when piper Donald Fraser, the local blacksmith, and four companions turned back the Hanoverian force under Lord Loudon, coming from Inverness to capture Prince Charles Edward Stuart who was sleeping at Moy Hall.

Each year the Moy Fair is held at Moy Estate which is about 10 miles south of Inverness on the A9 Inverness to Perth road. Turn left just after Daviot on to B9154 and follow signs to Field Sports Fair.
