Grantown-on-Spey,  planned town of the 18th century founded in 1776 in an effort 10 provide a new economic focal point for the fertile area where it stands.

Within a few years it had become the main market town for a large part of the Spey valley.

As well as linen goods, woollen clothes were produced, some of which gained an export market as far afield as West Africa.

By the time the linen industry failed, in the face of the competing cheap cotton from the Americas, Grantown had become sufficiently well established to benefit from the impetus of its own fast growth and went on to become one of the finest planned towns in the north of Scotland. In 1863 the railway arrived to set the seal on future prosperity.

Sigh seeing around the Spey Valley area then Grantown-on-Spey is the ideal location for your Bed and Breakfast stay.

The Square, a former marketplace, has been presented as a gift to the townsfolk to mark the bicentenary of the founding of Grantown.

Some of the oldest buildings line this square, along with trees a century old - but showing little signs of their age, so much do they benefit from the sharp, clean air of the area.

Grantown now caters mainly for the holidaymaker. Just north of the town is Castle Grant, part of a 15th century, seat of the Earls of Seafield.
