Dunbeath,  small fishing village on the north-east coast with a small harbour. Dunbeath Castle, I430, is a magnificent edifice, made more prominent by its position on a high cliff overlooking the small river and beach.

At one time it was a stronghold of the Sutherlands.

They lost favour with King James IV, who gave it to the Innes family. It then descended through the female line to a branch of the Sinclair Earl s of Caithness.

The village is divided into three segments, The harbour and its collection of houses and other buildings is one side the second sits next to the northern end of the bridge and comprises a row of houses and a shop, the third is found on the hillside on the south side of the valley, dominating poised on a cliff's edge is Dunbeath Castle one mile south of the village.

The original keep of the castle dates from the 1400's the village itself was built to cash in on the herring boom in the early 1800s, with up to 100 boats operating from the harbour here, all in the past there is a heritage centre depicting the history of this area there are plenty of Bed and Breakfast in this area making this a good place to explore ideal location for ramblers.
