Found on Scotland's enchanting Black Isle peninsula, Fortrose stands as a captivating Highland town where ancient history meets breathtaking natural beauty. This charming coastal settlement, overlooking the pristine waters of the Moray Firth, offers visitors an authentic Scottish experience just 20 minutes from Inverness.

Fortrose's rich heritage dates back centuries, with the magnificent ruins of Fortrose Cathedral serving as a testament to its medieval significance. The town's strategic location has shaped its fascinating history, from Pictish settlements to its role as a royal burgh.

The natural splendor surrounding Fortrose is truly spectacular. Chanonry Point, just minutes from the town center, ranks among Europe's premier dolphin-watching locations. Its perfect positioning makes it an ideal base for exploring the wider Highlands, from Loch Ness to the Cairngorms National Park.

The town's compact size ensures everything is within walking distance, from cozy pubs serving local ales to artisan shops showcasing Highland crafts. Fortrose represents the very essence of Highland Scotland – where every corner tells a story, every view takes your breath away, and every encounter leaves lasting memories.

A Hidden Highland Gem – Fortrose, Scotland

We absolutely loved our time in Fortrose! This peaceful Black Isle town offers stunning views over the Moray Firth and easy access to Chanonry Point – one of the best places in the UK to spot wild dolphins (and we did!). The town has a charming mix of history and nature, from the atmospheric ruins of Fortrose Cathedral to coastal walks with dramatic scenery.

The local cafes were welcoming, especially after breezy seaside walks, and the whole area felt laid-back and authentic. If you’re looking for a relaxing Highland break with wildlife, history, and beautiful surroundings – Fortrose is a must-visit.

Tip: Time your visit to Chanonry Point around the rising tide for the best chance of seeing dolphins!
