Charlestown of Aberlour Banffshire is so named after its founder, Charles Grant of Wester Elchies, who laid out the original village in 1812, But it stands on a very ancient church site dedicated to St Drostan, and the original name of Aberlour parish was Skirdustan ‘Drostanis slice’. so the township is locally known simply as Aberlour, in defiance of what the maps may say Drostan's Well. surmounted by a simple cross, survives in the grounds of the local distillery.

Opposite it on the other side of the main road is the kirkyard with the ruins of the pre-Reformation church, and here too the Lour Burn is spanned by the ruined arch of the old highway to the kirk. About l mile south approached by a path along the Lour is the Linn of Ruthrie, a fine waterfall in a Wooded dell. Aberlours mile long, tree-shaded High Street has an attractive square and village green near its west end, from which a road leads past the station to the banks of the Spey, here spanned by a picturesque suspension foot-bridge.

The Church of St Margaret is very much worth a visit for the carving on its pillars of flowers, fruit and animals in pre-Raphaelite profusion. About 0.5 miles east is the neo-classic pile of Aberlour House, now a preparatory school for Gordonstoun Overlooked by the graceful cone of Ben Rinnes on the south and by Ben Aigan on the north east and surrounded by finely Wooded, hilly country, Aberlour, with its fishing on the Spey, has a situation of great beauty. Charlestown offers mos types of holiday accommodation from Hotels, B&B, Guest Houses to Self Catering in idyllic cottages.

Aberlour, nestled in the picturesque Speyside region, is a charming destination that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Scotland. I had the pleasure of visiting this charming Highland village recently, and I must say, the warm and inviting experience it offers is truly remarkable.

Aberlour is a place that immediately captivates with its stunning natural beauty. This hidden gem offers a picturesque backdrop with lush, rolling hills and a serene River Spey. The landscape offers a delightful escape for outdoor enthusiasts, boasting an array of hiking trails and picturesque spots just waiting to be discovered.

Immersing oneself in Aberlour's whisky culture is an essential part of any visit. I was warmly embraced by the Aberlour Distillery, which boasts a rich heritage. The guided tour provided an educational and delightful experience, allowing me to learn about the art of whisky-making and sample their exquisite single malt Scotch whiskies. An experience that every whisky lover should savour.

The local community in Aberlour is incredibly friendly. The locals are warm and hospitable, eager to showcase their cherished village to tourists. Aberlour Square is a charming destination with its quaint shops, cafes, and pubs. It's a great place to immerse yourself in the local culture, indulge in delicious traditional Scottish cuisine, and even have a fun night out at one of the cosy pubs in the village.

The Speyside region was a definite highlight of my trip. The nearby Macallan and Glenfiddich distilleries are iconic names in the whisky world and offer a worthwhile visit. The Speyside Cooperage proved to be a fascinating visit, offering valuable insights into the artistry involved in creating whisky casks.

Aberlour's central location proved to be a fantastic base for my adventures in Speyside. The Speyside Way offers breathtaking views and serene woodlands, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. The River Spey offers a serene setting for a delightful riverside picnic and moments of peaceful contemplation.

Aberlour is undeniably a remarkable Highland gem that has deeply touched my soul. This destination is a must-visit due to its combination of natural beauty, rich whisky heritage, and welcoming community. Aberlour offers a perfect blend of whisky, nature, and authentic Scottish charm, making it a must-visit destination for whisky enthusiasts, nature enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an authentic Scottish experience. I'm excited to go back and explore more of this captivating village and the Speyside region.
