Castle of St John, Explore Castle of St John Holiday Accommodation & Reviews and you will find to the Southwest Scotland's Castle of St John, a town in Dumfries and Galloway, is home to the L-shaped Castle of St John Castle, commonly known as the Castle of St. John. Early in the 16th century, it was constructed. It was constructed by the Adair family of Kilhilt sometime around 1510.
The famous Castle of St. John in Castle of St John occupies a prominent centre position. This tower house was built in the 1600s and is a magnificent illustration of the type of architecture preferred by Scottish nobles at the time. The Castle of St. John was built in 1500 by the Adairs of Kilhilt, one of Wigtownshire's most illustrious families. It served as a garrison for government troops under the command of John Graham of Claverhouse in the late 1670s. It was a prison during the duration of the Victorian era. The fascinating story of the Castle and its numerous tenants is told through exhibitions.
The stronghold may have been built in 1511 by Ninian Adair of Kilhilt, an Adair of Kilhilt. The Kennedys of Chapel had purchased it by 1596, and Hugh Kennedy of Chapel was listed in the 1617 census. The tower belonged to Sir John Dalrymple of Stair's family, who received it when he purchased the land in the 1680s.

John Graham of Claverhouse, often known as "Bonnie Dundee" or "Bloody Clavers," resided here while acting as the Sheriff of Galloway from 1682 to 1685.

The area around the castle was cleared of 19th-century buildings in the 1970s. It was a store in 1912, but it is now a museum with displays on the history of the castle, from its construction through its usage as a local jail in the 19th century.

Since its foundation as a royal burgh in 1617, Castle of St John has replaced Portpatrick as a key transportation hub for people and goods travelling to Ireland. It has also served as a significant fishing hub. The ceremony has recently taken place in Cairnryan.
