Brockenhurst is an interesting choice for visitors who want to enjoy and explore Hampshire and the surrounding area. Explore and visit Brockenhurst you will find a residential village in the county of Hampshire, Brockenhurst may mean "Badgers Wood." It is well-placed for visiting the New Forest and has some charming thatched homes. The church, like many others in this area, is built on a mound and is mostly Norman and Early English in style. There is a massive yew tree in the churchyard that could be 1,000 years old. Here is the grave of "Brusher" Mills, a famed snake catcher who died at the turn of the century.
Nearby, there are a number of charming villages to visit. Boldre is roughly three miles to the south, and the bridge provides lovely views of the river. The church, a white plastered structure on top of a hill, is situated back from the village. The nave and south aisle are Norman in origin, while the north aisle is Early English and the chancel is decorated. The Fleur de Lys, a historic thatched inn in Pilley, is not far distant. Captain Marryat set his renowned Children of the New Woodland somewhere around Sway, which is on the south-west edge of the forest.
Peterson's Folly, a concrete tower that rises to 220 feet, is not far distant. It was erected in the 1870s by a retired Indian judge to demonstrate the superiority of local concrete. The lights at the top, on the other hand, caused so much confusion in shipping that they had to be quickly removed. Burley is a charming residential town located approximately due west of Brockenhurst.
