Check out Breamore, Hampshire, pronounced Bremmer locally, is located on the outskirts of the New Forest and is home to one of Hampshire's few nearly complete Anglo-Saxon churches. It is set in grounds near the red-brick Elizabethan manor house, among magnificent cedars and an ancient yew.
The church was originally cruciform and dates back to around 1000, but the north transept has vanished. Except for the doorway, the walls, which are 32 yards long, are Anglo-Saxon. A mutilated Saxon rood with the Virgin Mary and St John, which was originally painted and is now protected by the porch, may be found above the south door. An Anglo-Saxon inscription written in 6-inch-high letters over the arch in the south transept reads, "Here is Manifested the Covenant to Thee."
The Elizabethan manor, Breamore House, was finished in 1583 and burned down in 1857, mercifully without affecting the outward building. The Hulse family has owned the mansion, which is open to the public, for almost 200 years, and they have amassed a magnificent collection of paintings, furniture, and works of art.
A unique mediaeval maze, The Miz Maze, is found in a wood to the north west of the hamlet on Breamore Down. It's made of turf and is around 30 yards long. The grass walkways gradually lead to a central mound, which are cambered at the corners. Another maze can be found near Winchester at St Catherine's Hill, but no one knows why it was erected, but it may have religious significance.
A long barrow may be seen to the south, while Grims Dyke, an ancient earthwork on the Wiltshire border, can be found to the north west. Castle Hill, about a mile south of the hamlet, provides spectacular views of the Avon.
