The town had a musical vicar in the seventh century who performed a masque for James the first and his queen. Some of the locals once misled the excisemen into thinking they were catching the moon's reflection or moon-raking when they were discovered raking the pond for smuggled whiskey casks. Bishop's Cannings is most known now for its stunning cruciform 13th century church. The lofty spire and clerestory date from the 15th century, the vaulted south porch from the 4th century, and the triple lancet windows from the 3rd century Early English. The Emle Chapel features some interesting monuments, and the church has a strange carrel painted with a giant hand and inscriptions in Latin. This could have been a monk's meditation chair in the past. William Bayley of this parish, who travelled with Captain Cook, donated money for the organ.

Bishop Canning Located on the edge of Devizes, next to the famous Kennet and Avon Canal, and close to the nearby villages of Coat and Stert. This old market town has a lot to offer, like a leisure centre, supermarkets, shops, a movie theatre, and a theatre.
