Visiting Ballindalloch Castle
Ballindalloch Castle, a Scottish castle located in Banffshire, Scotland. This private home is opened to the public six days a week from 10am until 5pm when the family move back in to their rooms, the family feeling is evident wherever you go with personal photographs dotted around and a warm feeling of care and pride is inculcated in every room, understandably no photos are permitted inside the castle.Built in 1546 in the heart of Speyside, Scotland’s most prolific whisky region, it is one of the few private castles in Scotland, it has been the family home to the McPherson-Grants for 24 generations and a long and interesting family history, the Castle has many interesting pieces of furniture and objects, well-described in write-up cards on the self-guided Tours, the turret stair is a challenge, but optional routes are clearly noted. all rooms are lavished in tastefully furnished period and family furniture, elegant sitting rooms, bedrooms and valuable oil paintings adorn the walls.
One hallway holds an outstanding collection of 17th-century Spanish masterpieces, the grand dining room is very impressive, as is the wood panelled library one of the finest country house libraries in all of Scotland.

The Castle is surrounded by a incredible landscape, the Rivers Spey and Avon run through the estate, offering excellent fishing and river walks, the grounds are a must to enjoy with the very well-maintained rock garden and more formal walled garden, though at their best in spring for the azaleas and rhododendrons and July for the roses the grounds are absolutely beautifully kept with the best lawn edges in the north of Scotland, maintained by one gardener and one groundsman, the grass is beautifully cut, beds are weed free as are the extensive gravel paths, along with the cattle that graze here belonging to the oldest Aberdeen Angus herd in the world.
The Village of Ballindalloch is approximately 15 miles beyond the town of Grantown-upon-Spey, to get there take the A9 south from Inverness, just after the village of Slochd take the A938 signposted Carrbridge, continue on to the A938 until Dulnain Bridge where you turn left onto the A95, after crossing the River Avon the road climbs steeply for a short while, past the War Memorial on your right, is the Castle entrance
