The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, more commonly known as Ely Cathedral, is an Anglican cathedral located in the city of Ely in the county of Cambridgeshire in England.
In the year 672 A.D., Saint Etheldreda established an abbey church, which later evolved into the cathedral. The existing structure was designated a cathedral in 1109, however its origins can be traced back to the year 1083. It was known as the Cathedral of St. Etheldreda and St. Peter up until the time of the Protestant Reformation. After that, it was refounded as the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely and has remained the primary church of the Diocese of Ely, which is located in Cambridgeshire. It is the home of both the Bishop of Ely and the Bishop of Huntingdon, one of the diocese's suffragan bishops. Architecturally speaking, it is remarkable due to its size as well as the artistic features it possesses. The galilee porch, lady chapel, and choir were all reconstructed in an extravagant Decorated Gothic style after originally being constructed in a colossal Romanesque style. Its most distinguishing characteristic is an octagonal tower in the centre that has a lantern perched atop it. This tower creates a one-of-a-kind interior space and, together with the West Tower, dominates the surrounding landscape. A typical day at Ely Cathedral consists of morning and evening services. This is despite the fact that it is a popular tourist destination that sees approximately 250,000 people every year.
