Towards the end of last century Stronsay made the headlines with the 'Stronsay Beast'. Though history has since shown that the remains found on the island's shore were those of a large basking shark, at the time it created a heated debate among scholars in London and Edinburgh, who, as might be expected, agreed to disagree on the origins of the beast. As early as 1319, Stronsay was a fishing community, which industry the islanders still practise.
